Short Information about Ashtavinayak Temples
Ashtavinayak has eight Ganpati temples which are located in Maharashtra, The elephant-headed Ganesha holds special significance for Hindus especially in Maharashtra, Each temple has a distinct idol of Ganesha, The Ashtavinayaka Yatra or pilgrimage to eight Ganesha temples in Maharashtra is considered very important.
1) Mayureshwar
Location: Morgaon, Pune District, India
Info : Mayureshwara is believed to have slain the demon Sindhu at this spot, Main Ganpati smaller in size, made of sand, iron and diamonds enclosed in copper sheet by Pandavas.
2) Siddhivinayak
Location: Siddhtek, Ahmednagar District, India
Info : God Vishnu killed asur Madhu & Kaitabh after propitiating Ganesha here. This is only Ganpati of these eight with the trunk positioned to the right.
3) Ballaleshwar
Location: Pali, Raigad District, India
Info : Ganesha saved devotee ballala who was beaten by villagers & his father for his devotion to him, This Ganpati has diamonds embedded in the eyes & navel with his trunk pointing to the left.
4) Varadvinayak
Location: Mahad, Raigad District, India
Info : Sage grutsamad is famous for the mantra Gananan tav. He founded temple & called this Ganesha – Varadvinayak, the idol faces the east, has its trunk on the left, 4 Elephanta idols on 4 sides of the temple.
5) Chintamani
Location: Theur, Pune District, India
Info : Ganesha got back precious chintamani jewel from greedy guna or sage Kapila at the spot, The idol also has the left trunk with carbuncle and diamonds as its eyes, The idol aces east side.
6) Girijatmaj
Location: Lenyadri, Pune District, India
Info : Parvati underwent austerities meditating on Ganesha for twelve years at Lenyadri, Temple stands amidst a cave complex of 18 caves, This temple is the 8th cave are called Ganesh-leni.
7) Vighneshwar
Location: Ozar, Pune District, India
Info : Vighnasura demon defeated by Ganesha here, the main hall of the temple is 20ft long & inner hall 10ft long, this idol facing east and has its trunk towards left.
8) Mahaganpati
Location: Ranjangaon, Pune District, India
Info : Shiva is believed to have worshiped Ganesha before fighting the demon Tripurasura here, it is said that original idol is hidden in basement, Having 10 trunks and 20 hands is called Mahotkat.
